Bali Transportation Guide – Car, Scooter, Taxi Rental
Bali has plenty of drivers with decent cars ready to offer their services to you. You can often simply not miss them. Especially in the more popular destinations like Ubud, Sanur, Seminyak, etc., you will very often be asked while just walking around if you need “TRANSPORT”.
These drivers are usually locals from the area where they operate and are part of the local community. Some of these communities have even organized driver associations which determine the quality of cars and check that these guys are behaving properly, and are also registered. The problem is that it is sometimes difficult to know what is the correct price for your deposit; and like any popular tourist destination around the world, travelers can be overcharged if they don’t know the right price for a service. Particularly at night where alcohol plays a role.
Transportation apps like Uber
Uber no longer operates in Bali, but there are two amazing ride apps that let you hire motorbike taxis and cars online, where the prices are transparent and the service is excellent. The problem is that in some areas they are “hated” by local driver communities and sometimes even beaten if they enter their “territory”. However, over the past two years during Covid this has eased and you can book transport online with no problem. In Ubud and Sanur, local drivers are still a bit of a problem when in reality most of them have already become GoJek and/or Grab drivers and therefore need to provide good service at competitive prices.
GOJEK and GRAB – the most popular and convenient transport applications
For short distances, you can order a scooter taxi, GoJek (preferred) & Grab. They are really cheap, provide a helmet and allow you to avoid the main roads where the traffic is often too dense. For longer distances or if you have luggage etc., order a GoCar online.
For circuits and long distances, we advise you to rent a car WITH driver (see below). We will soon be re-launching our online store for tours and car hire from reputable operators, who pay their employees a fair wage, pay their taxes, maintain their cars, have all permits in place and ensure that you are well taken care of.
Taxis in Bali
The most reliable taxi company with metered taxis is BLUEBIRD. We suggest using them only. You can stop them on the road or these days you can also order one via the GOJEK App (GO-CAR).
Taxis are plentiful in tourist areas, but often difficult to find in remote areas. That’s when it’s best to get your GOJEK app ready and order a Go-CAR or ask the hotel reception to get you a Blue Bird taxi.
