HomeToGo Releases Summer 2022 Travel Forecast
Demand survey and research data predicts a peak travel season defined by
more International travel, city breaks and sustainable stays

Luxembourg, April 27, 2022 – HomeToGo SE (Frankfurt Stock Exchange: HTG), the marketplace with the world’s largest selection of vacation rentals, today released its travel forecast for summer 2022.

Looking ahead to the upcoming high season, new information from HomeToGo shows how holidaymakers around the world are planning to travel in the coming summer, including the first summer in two years without significant travel restrictions in place. In 2022 so far, globally, the vacation rental market has seen an overall annual increase of approximately +60% in global vacation rental searches for this summer season, and an observed increase of approximately + 9% of the average length of stay. Additionally, more than half (56%) of all vacation accommodation searches globally this year are for stays in international destinations, up from 34% in 2021*.

Bucket List International travel on the rise
A recent HomeToGo global consumer survey of 1,900 participants adds further insight into the pent-up travel demand observed. 82% of US respondents said they want to travel more this year compared to 2021 – and research trends suggest travelers around the world will use summer 2022 to start ticking far-flung destinations off their bucket lists. So far this year and compared to the same period in 2021, HomeToGo has seen a +201% increase in vacation rental searches in Bali, with Santorini and the Maldives seeing search increases of +126% and +62 % respectively.

City Breaks are back
Capital cities are another trending destination type for the upcoming high season, with HomeToGo seeing compelling search increases for Lisbon (+320%), London (+266%), Rome (+237%), Copenhagen (+227 %) and Paris (+185%). Additionally, HomeToGo’s 2022 Summer Forecast survey found that more than a third (38%) of UK participants planned to visit cities during their holidays, making city breaks the second most popular type of trip just behind the retreats to the beach.

Stays and sustainability
Even with increased freedom to travel abroad and an observed desire to travel abroad, domestic destinations will remain popular for the summer season, building on the vacation boom of the past two years. 42% of German travelers surveyed intend to visit their country of residence for a vacation in the coming year. Sustainability concerns are one of the drivers of this continued trend, as two-thirds (67%) of German travelers say eco-friendliness plays a role in their choice of holiday destination. Elsewhere in the world, American travelers are becoming green when choosing their accommodation, with more than a third (35%) of American participants saying they would be more likely to book a vacation home with green features. Examples of selected features include renewable energy sources and eco-friendly design.

*Results are based on observed global searches and bookings made through HomeToGo from January 1, 2022 to April 20, 2022 with a check-in date for summer 2022 (June 21, 2022 – September 23, 2022), and compared to the same booking period in 2021 with an arrival date for summer 2021 (June 21, 2021 – September 23, 2021). The data was collected on April 20, 2022.
Overview of the survey: Research conducted by HomeToGo with a sample of 1,900 respondents in the UK, Germany and the US. To participate in this survey, respondents had to be 18 years of age or older. The survey was conducted online between March 22, 2022 and April 11, 2022.
