Microsoft Flight Simulator Sim Update 10 Delayed and Canada World Update Announced; First look at the helicopter revealed
Microsoft and Asobo Studio hosted a direct showcasing upcoming plans for Microsoft Flight Simulator, which celebrates the second anniversary of its release today.
The show was helmed by Microsoft Flight Sim chief Jorg Neumann, alongside Asobo CEO Sebastian Wlock and executive producer Martial Bossard, who provided plenty of interesting details.
First, we learn that Sim Update 10 will be delayed, likely by more than two weeks. It was originally scheduled for August 23, so it will slide through September.
The development team is working with Nvidia to optimize the performance of DirectX 12 and is also investigating performance hits in DirectX 11.
On top of that, they are working with AMD to implement FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). It won’t be ready for Sim Update 10, but it should arrive later.
An enhancement is also in the works for DLSS in partnership with Nvidia to remove the blurring effect on the glass cockpit displays. The developers hope to implement it in the Sim 11 update, but no promises have been made as research is still ongoing.
The big news comes in the form of the announcement of the World XI update, which will be released on September 27, 2022 and will feature Canada.
It will include new DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and aerial photos, 5 new handcrafted airports, 89 points of interest, 12 photogrammetry-enhanced cities, 3 landing challenges, 3 bush trips and 3 flights of discovery.
The new airports will be Bella Coola (CYCB), West Kootenay (CYCG), Dawson City (CYDC), Deer Lake (CYDF) and Iqaluit (CYFB).
We then watch the first images of a helicopter in the simulator, showing the Guimbal Cabri G2 in action.
This will come free with the 40th Anniversary Edition in November, and more will be shown next week at Gamescom.
The ATR 72/42 project is progressing rapidly and since it is an advanced aircraft, Microsoft is planning to call it “Expert Series”. The plan was to release it by the end of the year, but that might take a bit longer.
Next we hear about the G1000 NXi, which will become the default G1000 in simulation with Sim Update 10, including many new features.
It will include coupled VNAV, curved legs, lean assist, RNAV approaches, grabs, missed approaches, keyboard input, visual approach procedures and much more.
The VFR map has also been updated to show more useful information, including runways, frequencies, ILS courses, METAR and more.
WASM on Xbox works internally and will arrive in Sim Update 11.
Initial load times have been significantly reduced for Sim Update 10. The team has completely rewritten and optimized the process.
Today we also received news from third-party developers, starting with DC Designs, who released a video showing their AV-8B Harrier II in action.
Iris simulations announcement that it will release RAAF Virtual’s Pilatus PC-21 (which was originally made by Iris herself for Flight Simulator X and converted by RAAF Virtual for MSFS) for both PC and Xbox.
More information will come later, but you can see some images below.
Aerosoft and its partner studio SimWings announcement Menorca Airport (LEMH) in the Balearic Islands. It promises to bring another popular vacation destination to the simulator.
We also learn that the developer is working on updating its Ibiza airport to version 2. This will be a free update for those who have purchased the airport.
