Review of ‘Bali’s worst hotel’ A timely warning for Australian tourists
Australia’s first flight to Bali in two years took off yesterday.
But before Aussies start claiming our title as Bali’s biggest pests, we have a warning. This warning? A 2011 Tripadvisor review.
Published on the travel advice website in 2011 (the year Game Of Thrones premiered, Fidel Castro quit and Novak Djokovic won his first Wimbledon title), the review reveals why you should avoid a long layover if you can.
Left by Tripadvisor user @asiatraveller5000, a 50-64 year old man from Sydney, Australia, the reviewer claims he booked a cheap hotel and quickly regretted it.
“Transited for 36 hours so needed a cheap hotel,” @asiatraveller5000 wrote. “Airport reservations recommended it. I paid 450,000 rupees [$43 AUD] a night. I booked 2 nights. The photos looked correct.

All was not well, however.
He continues: “The room was the dirtiest I have seen in 30 years. Totally dirty. The bathroom must be 50 years old. There was hair and dirt all over the floor. The toilet seat was broken. The bath mat could not have been washed for a year. The doors were peeling with varnish. It was an absolute disgrace.
“I refused to take the room. They then showed me to 2 others including one whose toilet didn’t work at all. Both equally dirty.
“I refused to take them and asked for my money back as I had paid at the airport.”
You might think the story ends here. You would be wrong though. The man continued: “They then upgraded me to a room in the new part of the hotel. It was sort of clean.
“Except the bathroom reeked of God knows what. There were no towels or soap. I asked for them. I then checked the bed. The sheets were yellow but at least had been washed. The pillowcases pillow were stained and greasy. When the boy came back with the towel I got him to change the pillowcases. The towel was maybe 10 years old and was see through.
“If you stay here after reading these reviews, you’d be a complete idiot. The place should be demolished.

He is not the only traveler to have left a bad review of this hotel. Another wrote: “My wife and I stayed at the hotel just for one night (thank goodness) due to a flight change. Horrible conditions everywhere. The main problem with this hotel is that you have the idea that they never clean the place.

“The floors, the walls, the bathtubs, the toilets are really messy. Even the light switches are dirty. The sheets and blankets had stains all over them. Oh, did I mention cockroaches? Ok, I’m ok with that amount of money, you get what you get, but that doesn’t mean it can’t at least be clean.”
“Bad experience. My advice is to choose carefully and probably stay away from this hotel.
Yeah. You’ve been warned – if you’re a fan of lovely, clean hotels, be prepared to shell out upwards of $40 when transiting Bali (or anywhere, really).
